Writer’s Block
How often do we feel we have a story inside ourselves about a significant event in our lives, a moment of great triumph or tragedy, an incident that seems to rise above explanation, or a time of personal growth or realization, but putting it down in words has never come easy? Perhaps it is something we might one day want to share with the important people in our lives or just cherish for ourselves. Writer’s Block is another storytelling project of mine designed to do just that. I engage strangers on the street and encourage them to tell me that story in no more than 20 minutes. From our conversation, I then produce a mini-biography for them about this meaningful episode in their life. A street artist draws a picture of someone sitting in a chair using charcoal or colored pencils. It might be a caricature or a realistic rendering. I paint this picture with words as the tool instead of hand-drawn lines, combining the facts of the story with my perception as a listener and storyteller.
